Engineering Student Wins IBM Canada Undergraduate Scholarship

By: Adam Fox

Second year student Bahar Memarian in The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering received one of two IBM Canada Undergraduate Scholarships by the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF). The scholarship is awarded annually to Canadian female students in electrical or computer engineering who show leadership, volunteerism and are active in their communities.

In addition to the $2,500 scholarship, IBM has offered Memarian a summer internship in an engineering position and she is being sponsored to attend the CEMF Annual Awards Luncheon in Montreal during the Annual General Meeting of Engineers Canada held May 22. She will also act as an ambassador and role model for other young women by delivering presentations to encourage careers in engineering.

"I'm delighted Bahar Memarian has been recognized with this award," said Cristina Amon, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. "As a Faculty, we are dedicated to attracting and supporting female students. To have one of our students recognized for outstanding achievement as a woman in Engineering is a testament to our continued success in this area."

Memarian believes in the positive impact that women in Engineering can have and says she has learned that "much creativity and diversity is added to a project when the group includes both male and female members."

The Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation was founded in 1990 and honours the memory of the 14 women from École Polytechnique in Montreal who lost their lives on December 6, 1989. This is the second year the IBM Canada Undergraduate Scholarships have been awarded.
