Curriculum Revitalization

The creation of two new minor programs of study and the merging of the Electrical and Computer Options in Engineering Science, on which we reported in the Dec. 4, 2008 issue, received final approval by the U of T Committee on Academic Policy and Programs on Jan. 20, 2009.

Starting in fall 2009, the new minors in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Energy will be offered collaboratively across the Faculty for any Engineering student. Energy and environmental sustainability rank along with health care and economic stability as the key issues facing our world. Creation of these minors furthers our goal of educating global engineers, able to address the world’s most pressing issues.

Combining the Electrical and Computer Options in Engineering Science embraces the Engineering Science philosophy, delivering a program that provides a strong focus on the foundational principles that form the basis for both disciplines. In our highly integrated world, the two areas are increasingly tightly linked and this approach will give students the background and flexibility to integrate the knowledge required to develop emerging technologies and invent new ones. This change will be implemented as of fall 2009; students currently enrolled in the separate Electrical and Computer Options will not be affected.
