New Faces in the Faculty

New Administrative Staff

Mahvish Ashraf
Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program (DEEP) Program Coordinator, Engineering Student Recruitment and Outreach Office (ESROO)
Mahvish joined the Faculty as the Deep Program Coordinator in October 2007, where she is responsible for coordinating DEEP Summer Academy, DEEP in-school workshops and the Saturday Science and Engineering Academy. She also coordinates logistics for recruitment events organized by ESROO. Before assuming her current role, Mahvish worked as a casual employee in ESROO where she focused on outreach programs.


Erika Bailey
Executive Secretary to the Dean, Office of the Dean
Erika joined the Faculty in October; prior to assuming her current role, she worked in the Office of the Vice-President and Provost. Erika’s work includes coordinating the Dean’s busy schedule, acting as the point of contact for the Office of the Dean and much more.


Carolyn Bryant
Student Affairs Coordinator, IBBME
Carolyn assumed her role as Student Affairs Coordinator of IBBME’s Graduate Office in August 2007. As Student Affairs Coordinator, she is responsible for many student-related tasks, including organizing the weekly Graduate Student Seminar Series, processing applications and scholarships, maintaining the website and much more. Before assuming her current role, Carolyn worked as the Customer Service and Admissions Assistant at the Student Housing and Residence Life Office at University of Toronto Scarborough; while she was an undergraduate student she worked as a Student Ambassador and Admissions Assistant for the Admissions and Student Recruitment Office.


Joseph Chen
High Performance Parallel Cluster Administrator, Institute for Aerospace StudiesJoseph ChenJoseph joined IBBME after working as an SQL Engineering at Microsoft. In his role in the Faculty, Joseph is responsible for the administration, maintenance and management of a high-performance distributed memory parallel cluster computer, which has multiple nodes that run the Linux operating system. This activity involves hardware and software upgrades and troubleshooting, system performance monitoring, user accounts, and user support. Additional duties include implementation, installation, running, and support of software. Joseph is also responsible for the administration, maintenance, and management of the Institute's main server (Linux), network, backup server and administrative client nodes.


Tse V CT Chan
EM/Microwave Lab Manager, The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Tse joined the Faculty in September as the EM/Microwave Lab Manager. He is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of ECTI, undergraduate and EM labs. Tse works with graduates, staff and faculty members to ensure smooth coordination of activities and that all of their requirements are met. Prior to working in the Faculty, Tse worked as a Research Associate at Washington State University.


Carolyn Collins
Information Assistant, Office of the Registrar
Carolyn CollinsCarolyn assumed her position in August 2007; however, she had already been working in the Office of the Registrar in the same role on a casual basis since September 2006. Carolyn covers the front desk in the Office of the Registrar, greets visitors and answers questions and inquiries from students, staff, parents and members of the general public. She also provides degree verifications, produces confirmation of enrolment letters, prints invoices, and provides general information about the Faculty and University, in addition to much more. Before joining the Office of the Registrar, Carolyn worked as a Clerk for Toronto Social Services.


Danielle (Dani) Couture
Communications Coordinator, Marketing and Emerging Media, Office of Advancement
Dani CoutureDani assumed her role as Communications Coordinator, Marketing and Emerging Media, in December 2007. Among a number of communications duties, Dani is responsible for the coordination and production of the Engineering Newsletter, researching and writing Faculty-related articles, and maintaining the Faculty website. Prior to joining the Advancement Office, Dani worked in the Faculty as the Communications Coordinator for the Office.

 


Carolyn Farrell
Research Grants Administrator and Executive Assistant to the Vice-Dean, Research, Office of the Dean
Carolyn joined the Faculty in September in the newly created position of Research Grants Administrator and Executive Assistant to the Vice-Dean, Research.  Her previous position was at the University of Toronto's Joint Centre for Bioethics, where she spent two years.  Carolyn's responsibilities include coordinating and supporting the activities of the Research office and the Faculty Awards committee.  She manages the Research and Awards sections of the website and assists with research grants and award applications. 


Maria Giftakopoulos
Administrative Assistant, Dept. of Mechanical and Industrial EngineeringMaria Giftakpoulos
Maria joined the Faculty in October 2007 as Administrative Assistant to Professor Greg A. Jamieson and Mike Carter. Maria is responsible for a number of tasks including expense and fund transactions, answering calls, assisting with grants, updating the CEL website and arranging and booking meetings. Before joining the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, Maria worked as an Administrative Coordinator at Toronto Western Hospital.


Pierre Lee
Manager of Research Accounts and Purchasing, Dept. of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Pierre joined the Faculty in November as the Manager of Research Accounts and Purchasing. In his new role, Pierre is responsible for managing the Department's portfolio of sponsored research funding, maintaining accounting records and reconciliations, tracking and managing Faculty research accounts, liaising with internal and external staff on various financial issues and much more. Before joining U of T, Pierre worked as the Grants Manager at Stanford University.


Chaun Ma
Senior Web Developer, The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Chaun MaIn July 2007, Chan Ma assumed the role of Senior Web Developer after having worked on contract in the same position. He is responsible for three websites: graduate admissions website for six engineering departments; Magellan (ECE student course selections website); and the ECE TA online application website.

 


Tom Nault
Associate Registrar and Director of Scheduling, Office of the Registrar
Tom NaultTom works in the Office of the Registrar as the Associate Registrar and Director of Academic Scheduling. He joined the Faculty in June 2007 and is—in addition to many other duties—responsible for designing the undergraduate timetable and the production of the Faculty Academic Calendar. Prior to joining the Faculty, Tom worked as a Scheduling Coordinator at McMaster University, where he and another colleague were responsible for scheduling all undergraduate and MBA courses.


John Ng
Admissions Assistant, Engineering Admissions and Awards Office
John NgIn August 2007, John assumed the role of Admissions Assistant after having worked on contract in the same position. John works to inform prospective students about the Engineering @ U of T, addresses questions and concerns about the program—both in person and by phone and email—and assists with the distribution of OSAP documents.


Luke Ng
Alumni Relations Officer, Annual Fund and Young Alumni, Office of Advancement

Luke NgLuke joined the Faculty in August 2007 as the Advancement Office’s Alumni Relations Officer, Annual Fund and Young Alumni. His primary role is to engage and provide programming for new and young alumni; however, he also manages the Faculty’s Annual fund and serves as an administrative and financial assistant to the Engineering Alumni Association executive board. Before joining the Faculty in his current capacity, Luke worked as a work-study Assistant to the Manager of External Relations in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry and as a Project Coordinator for a DIS Alumni Database Project and the Advancement Office. Luke is a graduate of the Faculty and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering.


Kathryn Poole
Assistant, Research Accounting, Dept. of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Kathryn joined the Faculty in November 2007. As Assistant, Research Accounting, she processes expense reimbursements and other accounts payable transactions in addition to assisting faculty and staff. Before working at U of T, Kathryn lived and worked in Asia for eight years.


Sandra Walker
Manager of Operations, IBBME
Sandra joined the Faculty as Operations Manager in October 2007. A long-time U of T employee, Sandra has worked for the University since 1998 and has spent most of her time working in various areas of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. She left briefly in Spring 2007 to work as the Registrar of the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music; however, she is thrilled to be working in the Faculty once again. Sandra is responsible for the coordination and management of all non-scientific and non-technical services of IBBME, which includes finances, human resources, communications, facilities, alumni relations and special events.


Holly Wang
Employment Counsellor and Workshop Facilitator, Engineering Career Centre (ECC)
Holly assumed the position of Employment Counsellor and Workshop Facilitator in August 2007. She works with engineering students to prepare them for their internship job applications and facilitates job application and employment-related workshops. Prior to working at U of T, Holly worked as an Employment Counsellor at Seneca College.


Natacha Wood
Employment Counsellor and Workshop Facilitator, Engineering Career Centre (ECC)Natacha WoodNatacha has worked in the ECC as an Employment Counsellor and Workshop Facilitator since August 2007. She provides individual career counselling to students and facilitates group developmental workshops. Before assuming her current role, Natacha attended McGill University where she completed her Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology; at the same time, she worked as a Guidance Counsellor at Marianopolis College in Montreal.
