Each year the Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) and Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) bring together the most innovative and creative Engineering undergraduate students to compete in six categories identifying solutions to Engineering problems.
Engineering students at the University of Toronto placed second in three categories at OEC February 6 to 8, 2009, qualifying to move to the CEC: “Innovative Design” – Ramy Ghattas and Paul Giampuzzi, both MechE 0T8 + PEY; “Engineering Communications” – Raphael Sammut, EngSci Infrastructure Option 1T0; and “Parliamentary Debate” – Yi-Wei Ang, TrackOne 1T2 and Wayne Lin, IndE 1T1.
At the CEC, held March 5 to 8, Sammut placed first in “Engineering Communications.”
“The OEC and CEC provide our students with the opportunity to engage with industry, and the chance to put their classroom knowledge into practice by creating sustainable and innovative designs,” said Grant Allen, Vice-Dean of Undergraduate Studies.
Only 200 students are invited to participate in the OEC and 150 students participate in the CEC. There are approximately 55,000 Engineering undergraduate students in Canada. This year marked the 30th anniversary of the OEC, which was hosted by the University of Guelph, and 25th anniversary of the CEC, hosted by the University of New Brunswick.
U of T hosts CEC next year.
