A Message from Dean Cristina AmonIt is a new academic year and again we enjoy seeing our green spaces and buildings fill with over 1250 First Year Engineering students, and our returning students who continue their journeys as future global engineers. The diversity of our students, like that of our alumni, is one of our Faculty's greatest strengths. Of our First Years, 24% are women and almost 500 students join us from outside Ontario. They represent each province and territory in Canada, as well as 52 countries. The Class of 1T4 is ready to follow in your footsteps to become engineering leaders that define the future. While our campus appeared quiet during the summer, our Faculty has been quite active. We take great pride as 17 U of T Engineering alumni and faculty were recognized by the Canadian Academy of Engineering. This unprecedented number of awards from one institution re-confirms our Faculty's reputation as a world leader in engineering. This summer, the University announced that ten of our Engineering alumni will be honoured with Arbor Awards, the University's highest honour for service and volunteerism. We also reached out to our alumni in New York, Montreal, Boston and Ottawa and our efforts will continue this autumn with events and visits to Calgary, Vancouver and California. I am also delighted to build our Faculty's relationship with our alumni in Asia. We have scheduled events in Singapore (October 19) and Hong Kong (October 21). I very much look forward to hearing our national – and international – alumni's broad and diverse contributions as Engineers. As we reach out, I welcome and encourage you, our alumni, to take advantage of the many opportunities to return, reconnect, renew and deepen your relationship with your alma mater. From an expanded Spring Reunion 2011 program and departmental alumni events to volunteering to speak to students and supporting our many programs and educational initiatives, there are many ways you can be involved. Let us help you stay in touch with Skule™. We are set for a rewarding year and I look forward to seeing you soon. Cristina Amon |
