A Message from Dean Cristina AmonAs we enter this third year of our Academic Plan 2011-2016, we take great pride in our achievements and use what we have learned over the past two years to galvanize our efforts towards creating a culture of excellence, enhancing the student experience, providing the highest quality of education, advancing innovative research, strengthening our outreach, collaboration, and influence, and pursuing resource stability. I am pleased to share with you our Year Two: Progress and Achievements Report, which highlights our accomplishments and activities over the past year as we take steps to advance our Academic Plan goals. We have made measurable progress that has direct impact in key areas of research, broadening the student experience, resources and international standing. Our Faculty is ranked as the top Engineering school in Canada by a significant margin in all international rankings, and we placed #12 on the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). This reputation enables us to attract some of the brightest students, as evidenced by our first-year cohort’s record incoming average of 91.8 per cent and the unprecedented number of students entering our graduate studies programs this term. We have provided more opportunities for enriching students’ experiences such as studying abroad and The Entrepreneurship Hatchery. We have also increased the choices and flexibility of the MEng through new programs in Cities Engineering and Management, Advanced Water Technologies and Process Design, Sustainable Aviation, and Financial Engineering. The Faculty has added new Chairs including the NSERC Design Chair, two Junior Chalmers Chairs, and four Canada Research Chairs, these as a direct result of growth in our Tri-Council funding share. And, in response to our pressing space needs, we are actively fundraising for our new building, the Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and have secured $50-million to date. Thank you for your commitment and many contributions towards our Faculty’s pursuit of excellence. |
