Professor and Alumnus Receive Order of Ontario
Professor Levente Diosady (ChemE) and alumnus Paul Godfrey (ChemE 6T2) are among the 29 Ontarians appointed to the Order of Ontario, the province's highest honour; awarded to Ontarians for excellence and achievement in any field.
A renowned food engineer, Professor Diosady developed a breakthrough technology for double-fortifying salt with iron and iodine for prevention of iodine deficiency and anemia; conditions which adversely affect some two billion people worldwide. He has also made outstanding contributions to Hungarian education in Canada, which have been recognized with the Rákóczi medal in Canada and the Szt. Laszlo Order in Hungary. A triple alumnus of the Faculty, Professor Diosady was inducted into the Engineering Alumnae Hall of Distinction in 2004. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Hungarian Academy of Engineering.
Paul Godfrey is one of Canada’s most prominent civic and business leaders. He had a twenty year career in municipal politics, during which he served as Chairman of Metropolitan Toronto, before entering the business world. Mr. Godfrey has served as the Publisher of The Toronto Sun and President of the Toronto Blue Jays. He is currently President and CEO of The National Post and Chair of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. In 1979, Godfrey established the Herbie Fund at the Hospital for Sick Children, which finances life-saving medical treatment for children around the world.
“I am delighted that the Government of Ontario has awarded this prestigious honour to two members of our community,” said Cristina Amon, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. “The contributions of these engineers have had an impact throughout the Province and beyond, and the Order of Ontario is a richly deserved recognition of their achievements.”
The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, bestowed the Order of Ontario at a ceremony held on Thursday, January 28 at Queen's Park.
