Highlights for the 2010 NSERC Strategic Project Grants Competition Deadline: April 15, 2010 This will be the fifth and final competition using the current target areas. A review will be undertaken to determine the target areas that will be in effect for competition years 2011 to 2015. Researchers are encouraged to submit proposals addressing the sub-priorities identified by the Science, Technology and Innovation Council (STIC) http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/ic1.nsf/eng/04160.html Small clarifying changes have been made to the following target areas: Advanced Communications and Management of Information; Competitive Manufacturing; Healthy Environment and Ecosystems; and Quality Foods and Novel Bioproducts. Project management costs may now be included in the direct costs of research. NSERC’s new Policy on Intellectual Property (IP) is now in effect. An IP agreement for a Strategic Project grant is required when the proposed research is likely to result in a disclosure of IP. Co-applicants from outside the natural sciences and engineering may be incorporated into the proposals. Applicants are encouraged to incorporate international collaborations into their proposals. In particular, researchers are invited to respond to a call for collaborative proposals under agreements with the Agence nationale de la recherche in France or the National Science Council in Taiwan. More details can be found at: The NSERC Strategic Network Grants (SNG) Program targeted program. Deadline: May 1, 2010 In an effort to address priority areas that were identified in the Government of Canada’s science and technology strategy, Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada’s Advantage, only applications investigating specific Strategic target areas may apply. For the 2010 preliminary application competition, only applications investigating the target areas of Advanced Communications and Management of Information, Healthy Environment and Ecosystems, and Sustainable Energy Systems will be accepted. Please read the Active Network Web page to ensure that your network proposal does not overlap with any existing networks. Co-applicants from outside the natural sciences and engineering may be incorporated into the proposals. More Details are available at: Open Call As the University of Toronto NSERC representative Stewart Aitchison has a small fund to be used to support activities which promote NSERC. This can include workshops, student conferences, meetings, etc. To apply send an email to vdr@ecf.utoronto.ca, Vice Dean, Research. NSERC and NSC in Taiwan – Calls for Proposals for Joint Research Projects Deadline: April 30, 2010 NSERC and the National Science Council (NSC) in Taiwan have issued concurrent calls for proposals to support joint research projects in priority areas conducted by teams from Canada and Taiwan. Research proposals must include the participation of a Canadian industrial partner or government organization, and will be evaluated on their scientific quality and relevance. Canadian scientists will apply through NSERC’s Strategic Project Grants Program while their Taiwanese counterparts will apply to NSC’s Global Partnership Programs– National Priority S&T. These priority areas include specific research topics outlined in the Strategic Project Grants Target Area Descriptions. NSERC has not reserved funds for applications related to international Concurrent Calls. However, funding is available on a competitive basis within the regular budget of the Strategic Project Grants program. The number of joint projects selected for funding and the total amount awarded will strongly depend on the number and quality of projects submitted. The agencies expect balanced scientific contributions and cooperation in joint projects.
